A proposed £80 million development, which had been given the go ahead by
the planning department, would have had one of the world’s largest indoor
ski areas and a mile-long cable car link connecting the Langsett Road Supertram
stop and the City.
Menta acquired interests in over 130 acres in the Upper Don
Valley including an investment made in the existing Sheffield Ski Village
in order to bring forward a fully themed Alpine Village and associated
leisure uses alongside a 350m long indoor real snow facility.
“ Sheffield Ski Village’s location offered Menta the opportunity
to bring state of the art snow facilities to Sheffield as a part of a regeneration
project that would have introduced a private sector funded gondola cableway to
a public transport link between the city centre tram system and one of the most
deprived housing areas in the UK. This development would have been one of the
catalysts in regeneration of the Upper Don Valley area. The potential is to create
over 1000 jobs within the facility and surrounding sports village with hotel,
restaurant and bars.” Craig Marks
